An Alabama fan's random thoughts going into Wisconsin week
Monday morning on my break at work I caught part of the coaches' press conference going into the Wisconsin game. It is still very strange to see both Offensive Coordinator Nick Sheridan and Defensive Coordinator Kane Wommack get their own press conferences. I can only imagine how entertaining it would have been to have seen a weekly press conference featuring Lane Kiffin or Jeremy Pruitt. It is amazing how much more open and welcoming this current Alabama staff is and I am wondering now if this is common among other programs as well?
Going to Madison is an interesting road game trip for Alabama as we know it is rare for the Tide to go to Big 10 Country. The only time in recent history we saw this happen was when we traveled to Happy Valley in 2011. I do think it is cool for fans to have the opportunity to travel to stadiums they wouldn't normally ever get to experience, and visa versa when these teams come to Tuscaloosa as well. I thought the neutral site games to start the season against a relevant opponent were fun, but there is something about a home and home series that is very satisfying. Other interesting home and home series that we will see in the next few years are Florida State, Ohio State, and West Virginia just to name a few.
As far as final thoughts from the South Florida game it still blows my mind that the coaching staff was so late to pull Wilkin Formby from the game? I realize Elijah Pritchett wasn't completely healthy but as rough as things were in the first half, you would have thought Pritchett would have started the second half. It was amazing how smooth the offense was able to move once he was brought into the game during the 4th quarter. I am expecting a much cleaner offensive line performance whether Kadyn Proctor plays or not against Wisconsin on Saturday.
I was very impressed with Justin Jefferson's performance against USF, but very disappointed that he will miss the first half this week due to the targeting penalty. I get it that safety is the most important thing when it comes to these players, but I think not only ejecting them from the game they commit the targeting penalty and some of the next game as well is ridiculous to me. Hopefully down the road there will be changes in the rules other than the 15-yard penalty being enforced unless the targeting is egregious.
