Antonio Langham the latest Alabama Football member of the College Football Hall of Fame
By Ronald Evans
Alabama Football now has 27 members of the College Football Hall of Fame. The 27th was announced this week by National Football Foundation and is Antonio Langham. Langham played four seasons in Tuscaloosa in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993. It is not a stretch to claim that the Crimson Tide would not have won the 1992 National Championship without Antonio Langham.
Late in the 1992 SEC Championship Game, Alabama and Florida were tied 21-21. Langham's pick-six gave the Crimson Tide a 28-21 win.
Langham's game-winning interception is often described as 'The Play that changed College Football'.
The 1992 SEC Championship was the first championship game by a major football conference. The move by the SEC Commissioner was considered bold then, but the payoff was immediate in that first year. College football would never be the same.
Langham was First Team All-American in 1992, and a Unanimous All-American in 1993. He finished his four-year Alabama football career with 19 interceptions and 141 tackles. He also became the Crimson Tide's first Jim Thorpe winner in 1993.
More than a few Alabama Crimson Tide fans will argue that Langham is the Crimson Tide's best cornerback ever. Considering the parade of Alabama cornerbacks to the NFL, that is quite a bold claim.
Antonio Langham played seven seasons in the NFL. He made the All-Rooke team in 1994, as a 16-game starter for the Cleveland Browns. His 102-game NFL career included 61 starts in his first four seasons. He finished with 76 career starts and 14 interceptions. His NFL teams were Cleveland, the Baltimore Ravens, the San Francisco 49ers, and the New England Patriots.
Langham is the Crimson Tide's only defensive back in the College Football Hall of Fame. The 2024 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be inducted on Dec. 10, in Las Vegas.
