College football's most talented team is the Alabama Crimson Tide
By Ronald Evans
No one likes to hear 'I told you so', so consider this post as a statement not just from me, but from many Alabama Crimson Tide fans. For months, we've said what 247Sports has now proved; the 2024 Alabama Crimson Tide is college football's most talented team.
Going back to 2015, 247Sports has calculated the talent level of FBS teams. Their Team Talent Composite (TTC) ranks teams based on national player rankings, including transfers and other roster changes.
The 247 calculation has been a pretty effective indicator of CFB Playoff success or failure. Except for Michigan last season, every National Champion, going back to 2015 has been in the TTC Top 10.
Over the last seven seasons, only seven trams ranked outside the TTC top 15 have made the four-team Playoff. Those teams have had little success. One that did was Kalen DeBoer's Washington team from last season. Alabama football fans can be confident DeBoer getting a 'less-talented' Washington team to the national title game says much about his coaching ability.
In 247's TTU calculations, seven SEC football teams are ranked in the top 12. Seven more SEC teams are ranked from No. 17 to No. 26. Compared to the SEC's 14 teams, the rest of college football has 11 teams ranked in the top 26.
247Sports Team Talent Composite
- 1) Alabama Crimson Tide with a rating of 1,018.28
- 2) Georgia Bulldogs - 1,006.89; 3) Ohio State Buckeyes - 998.62; 4) Texas Longhorns - 953.95; 5) Clemson Tigers - 924.63; 6) Oregon Ducks - 916.71; 7) Texas A&M Aggies - 914.52; 8) Oklahoma Sooners - 906.61; 9) LSU Bengal Tigers - 906.19; 10) Notre Dame Fighting Irish - 905.52; 11) Penn State Nittany Lions - 895.31; 12) Florida Gators - 894.24; 13) Florida State Seminoles - 879.48; 14) Miami Hurricanes - 868.15; 15) Southern Cal Trojans - 863.09
- Other SEC Teams: 17) Tennessee Vols - 858.67; 18) Auburn Tigers - 833.61; 19) Missouri Tigers - 807.36; 20) Ole Miss Rebels - 801.66; South Carolina Gamecocks - 798.18; 24) Kentucky Wildcats - 788.36; 26) Arkansas Razorbacks - 779.17; 34) Mississippi State Bulldogs - 743.77; 50) Vanderbilt Commodores - 695.96
One comparison jumps out as a statement about the talent disparity among the Power Four conferences and also the near absurdity that those conference champions get a bye and top-four seeding in the 12-team CFB Playoff format. Utah is projected by some college football pundits as a solid Playoff contender, as the likely Big12 Champion. In 247's TTC, the Utes are No. 33, one spot above a probable SEC doormat, Mississippi State.
247Sports cautions that the TTC is a good predictor of Playoff success, but is only one variable when predicting outcomes of individual games. That reality should dampen the enthusiasm of Alabama Crimson Tide fans enjoying a reinforcement of what we have sad for months. Alabama has the most talented roster in college football.
