  • Indiana Hoosiers (2-0) - A record-setting 77-3 win over Western Carolina draws attention to the Hoosiers, hence the ESPN projection of 12.7% Playoff probability. But Indiana has three or four losses in the future - and maybe more.
  • Michigan Wolverines (1-1) - Texas is very good; a legit National Championship contender ... but there is a serious problem when a defending National Champion gets hammered at home. The Wolverines might bounce back, but there could also be as many as four more losses ahead, so my take is the ESPN calculation of 11.2% is too high.

That's my list of Pretenders this week. My Watch List for future Pretenders has Oklahoma State, at 17.8% per ESPN; Boston College (17.7%); Oklahoma (14.5%); Washington State (12.2%; TCU (11.3%); Nebraska (11.3%); Washington (10.3%) and Memphis (10.3%).

In the Watch List group of potential Pretenders, Oklahoma State, Boston College, and Oklahoma share a similar problem. Due to the strength of the SEC and the Big Ten, getting into the Playoffs as an at-large team will be tough for ACC and Big 12 teams. There is very little chance either conference goes three deep. Oklahoma's problem is the ESPN Analytics are accurate, the Sooners are seventh among SEC teams. The SEC might get five teams, but not more.
