Could Boogie Fland be in play for Nate Oats and Alabama Basketball?
In late October, Alabama Basketball missed out as the nation's 2nd-ranked guard and 26th-ranked recruit overall Boogie Fland committed to Kentucky. The Alabama Basketball team was one of three finalists for Fland along with Indiana and Kentucky. The guard lit up the McDonald's All-American game last week with 17 points, three assists, and five rebounds while shooting 50% from three.
The departure from Kentucky of John Calipari may put the Alabama Basketball team right back into the race for one of the best players in the country. Alabama fell out of the initial race in the final weeks of Fland's recruitment as attention turned to Zoom Diallo. However, after Kentucky's disastrous split from Coach Cal and Indiana's brutal season, Fland could become a huge pickup for Nate Oats.
As things currently stand, Fland plans on seeing how Kentucky proceeds with its coaching search while focusing on this weekend's Nike Hoops Summit.
If Fland reopens his recruitment he's a must-have for Nate Oats and the Alabama Basketball program. In the coming days, we'll likely find out whether or not Mark Sears and Latrell Wrightsell return to Alabama at the guard position. Losing Sears would deal a serious blow to the team at point guard losing tons of experience and talent.
Fresh off of a strong statement seemingly turning down Kentucky and opting to stay in Tuscaloosa Nate Oats could make another massive statement by flipping Fland. Greg Byrne has said how important NIL is to both him and Oats and what better way to show that off by landing a game-changing recruit? Landing Fland would take Oats' seventh-ranked recruiting class all the way to the second-ranked class behind Duke.
2024-25 Roster could be a National Title Contender
Despite the Alabama Basketball team's improbable run to the Final Four, this certainly wasn't Nate Oats' best roster. He will likely retain several key pieces to this team while adding three top-fifty recruits and whichever transfers he decides to bring in. After a final four run, the buzz about the program and Oats' name becoming one of the hottest in the sport will continue to raise the caliber of players Alabama can recruit. A few massive additions and keeping key pieces in place could have Alabama among the title favorites for 2025.
