Even in Oklahoma, it is known the Alabama Crimson Tide is No. 1
By Ronald Evans
The Oklahoma Sooners have a rich college football history. Many Oklahoma fans are convinced the Sooners are the greatest college football program of all time. This century the Sooners have failed to win nine games in a season just four times. Not even the Alabama Crimson Tide can match that consistency during the same 24-season period.
Going back further into Oklahoma's history finds the longest winning streak of major college football. Under Oklahoma legend Bud Wilkinson, the Sooners won 47 consecutive games during 1953-1957. Far behind for that record are the Miami Hurricanes, with 34 consecutive wins during 2000-2002.
The Sooners were a bit of a Johnny-come-lately in terms of National Championships. Oklahoma has seven, with their first won in 1950. Along with Wilkinson, Barry Switzer and Bob Stoops are coaching legends.
The bottom line is Oklahoma fans have plenty of reasons to be proud. Oklahoma is a legit college football blue blood; just not to the standard of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Don't take my word for it. Instead, look to a source from the state of Oklahoma. Writing for The Oklahoman, Joe Mussstto ranked the 16 current SEC football programs. Alabama ranked No.1 and Oklahoma, No. 2.
