Is Kadyn Proctor playing this week vs. USF?: Latest injury update
Alabama starting left tackle Kadyn Proctor injured his shoulder in pre-game warmups for the season opener last week, and his status for week two against USF has been up in the air all week with head coach Kalen DeBoer calling him "day-to-day."
According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Proctor is doubtful to play on Saturday night. It would be the second straight game Proctor has missed, and delay his re-debut with the Crimson Tide by an additional week. Proctor famously left the Crimson Tide for home-state Iowa via the Transfer Portal this offseason, before quickly realizing his mistake and transferring back to Alabama just a few short months later.
Alabama has been preparing all week for Proctor to miss the game, shuffling and experimenting with different combinations up front. One of the more interesting combinations has had star left guard Tyler Booker kicking out to left tackle with Michigan State transfer Geno VanDeMark sliding into Booker's spot at left guard.
Backup tackle Elijah Pritchett started at left tackle in Proctor's place last weekend against Western Kentucky, but Pritchett got a little dinged up during the game himself. VanDeMark gives Alabama several options due to his ability to play either guard spot or center. Booker played tackle in high school and has practiced at both tackle spots during his Crimson Tide career.
I would expect Pritchett to get the start again this week, though, particularly if Proctor's injury isn't considered to be a long-term thing. If Proctor is likely to be back next week against Wisconsin or following the bye week when Georgia comes to town, there's no real point in shuffling the deck too much. Pritchett had a bit of an uneven start last week, but in fairness to him he has been in the heat of a battle for the starting right tackle spot all summer and fall, and was surprised to be thrust into the action on the other side of the line.
Hopefully Proctor will be healthy enough to play next week against Wisconsin as it would be nice to get the offensive line at least one full game together before the Georgia game on September 28th.
