Jalen Milroe now the betting favorite for the Heisman Trophy
After a dazzling performance against Georgia, Alabama QB Jalen Milroe is now the betting favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
The redshirt junior finished sixth in the Heisman voting last season in his first season as the starting quarterback, and it's clear after what he did to a stout Georgia defense filled with future pros, Milroe has reached the next step in his evolution as a player.
Per FanDuel, Milroe is the betting favorite for the stiff-arm trophy, at +210. Milroe is the favorite by a good margin, with Miami's Cam Ward in second at +500, and Colorado's Travis Hunter in third at +750.
Milroe was second in Heisman odds behind Ward following the injury to Texas QB Quinn Ewers two weeks ago.
Now, Milroe finds himself alone at the top, after he did what his doubters thought he couldn't. The "book" on Milroe was that you needed to pressure him because when blitzed he was prone to bailing out of the pocket too quickly.
Last season's version of Milroe didn't trust his offensive line. He was one of the most sacked quarterbacks in the country in 2023. So far in 2024, he has complete faith in those blocking in front of him. Milroe has been sacked five times in four games, three of which occurred in the USF game when Alabama was missing two starters and had a third playing out of position.
Georgia blitzed a lot last night, and Milroe consistently made them pay. Against the blitz, Milroe was 17/20 for 191 yards and a touchdown. Georgia didn't sack him one time.
Milroe became the first player in the AP Poll era to throw for 300 yards, rush for 100, and run for two touchdowns against a Top-5 opponent. He finished with 491 yards of total offense in the second most prolific game by a quarterback in Alabama history, behind only Bryce Young's masterpiece against Arkansas three years ago.
And Milroe did it against the boogeymen from Athens. Against the defense that never gets shredded. He completed the short and intermediate passes that people said he couldn't. He was 6/9 for 89 yards and a touchdown on intermediate throws.
He used his legs on designed runs, and on passing plays he kept his eyes downfield and attacked. He was firmly in command of the offense, and played fast, free, and fearless.
Milroe outperforming Georgia's Carson Beck on the national stage will get him into serious first round - or even first overall - conversations for the 2025 NFL Draft.
The world is finally recognizing Jalen Milroe for who he is: one of the best quarterbacks, and one of the best players, period, in the country.
