From a standpoint of public knowledge, the first Alabama Football Fall Camp scrimmage was uneventful. For fans that might be disappointing, but in contrast one thing Kalen DeBoer said in his post-scrimmage is huge. Asked about his biggest concern at this stage of the preseason, his answer was "staying healthy." Staying, not 'getting' healthy is a big deal.

In recent days, Texas, Tennessee, and Notre Dame have lost starters to season-ending injuries. Not only has Alabama avoided that, the Crimson Tide is according to DeBoer "relatively healthy." There have been minor injuries, but nothing too serious that a few days of treatment and recovery will not cure.

Alabama ran 102 plays on Saturday morning, with 81 involving the ones and twos. DeBoer said it will be the longest scrimmage of the preseason. Getting through it unscathed is a reason for some celebration, and fingers crossed going forward.

More good news from DeBoer is that there were few penalties and no false starts. Commenting on the lack of mental mistakes, DeBoer described the scrimmage performance as "pretty clean."

DeBoer was asked about Jalen Milroe's scrimmage performance. His answer was more about the quarterback group, saying they are "making the throws they need to make and taking plays that are there." Perhaps honing in a bit on Milroe, DeBoer added "there are times they need to learn to throw the ball away." He explained the offense has many good options to make first downs, when not hampered by avoidable negative plays.

Alabama Football and closely guarded information

As expected no scrimmage stats were provided. DeBoer declined to go into details about the performance of the Crimson Tide's receivers, other than saying the ball was spread around to numerous pass catchers.

It is interesting the DeBoer Alabama football era has become quickly known for more open communication. It is not a complaint to say that was not true Saturday. DeBoer did not come close to the level of detail Nick Saban commonly provided after scrimmages. With new systems of play, more guarded information makes sense.
