One or more possible 10-2 SEC football teams could miss the Playoffs

As many as eight SEC football teams could finish the regular season at 10-2 (or better). More likely the number will be six or fewer. It is possible five SEC football teams could make the Playoff field. Even if the records warranted six SEC teams being chosen, it would not happen. The CFB Playoff Selection Committee would not be so bold as to restrict the number of Playoff participants from the Big Ten, ACC, and the Big 12 to a total of just five teams.

As implausible as it may seem, there is a 'not-wild' scenario in which LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Texas finish the regular season at 10-2 or better. 247's Brad Crawford, recently made such a prediction.

2024 SEC Football Regular Season per Brad Crawford

  • Texas Longhorns (11-1) - Single loss to the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station
  • Alabama Crimson Tide - (10-2) - Losses to Georgia in Tuscaloosa and Tennessee in Knoxville
  • Georgia Bulldogs - (10-2) - Losses to Texas in Austin and Ole Miss in Oxford

If Crawford's Georgia and Alabama Football predictions are proven correct, the Bulldogs would have a head-to-head advantage over the Crimson Tide.

  • LSU Bengal Tigers - (10-2) - Losses to Alabama in Baton Rouge and to Florida in Gainesville
  • Ole Miss Rebels - (10-2) - Losses to LSU in Baton Rouge and to Oklahoma in Oxford
  • Tennessee Vols - (10-2) - Losses to Oklahoma in Norman and to Georgia in Athens

Making such a potentially nightmarish situation worse is that Missouri and Texas A&M have a chance to finish 10-2. Crawford has both teams with 9-3 records. His losses for Missouri are Texas A&M, Alabama, and South Carolina. The Tigers could get a road win over South Carolina to finish 10-2. Crawford's losses for Texas A&M are Florida, LSU and Auburn. The Aggies could win in Gainesville in September. Even more likely is a Texas A&M win in Auburn in November.

Group of Five Commissioners would do well to hope for a chaos-driven season in the SEC. If an SEC team (or more) is left out of the CFB Playoffs with a 10-2 record, a future with five auto-bids would be in jeopardy.
