Alabama Football Defensive Depth Chart

  • Interior Defensive Line - At the nose guard and defensive tackle positions are five guys for rotation. The starters are considered to be Tim Keenan and Jaheim Oats, with Tim Smith, James Smith, and Damon Payne close behind. Redshirt freshman Edric Hill is an important backup. Kalen DeBoer has frequently praised this group's ability as run defenders.
  • Bandit - Alabama is so deep at so many positions, the term 'loaded' can be overused. But it certainly applies to the Bandit position. Veteran Jah-Marien Latham can be called the first-unit guy, but likely getting as many snaps will be transfer LT Overton. Added to the position's rotation will be Keon Keeley and Jordan Renaud.
  • Wolf - Another DEEP position; so deep in some defensive situations, two of these guys will be on the field together. The first snaps have been earned by Que Robinson. But Keanu Koht might be fairly named Wolf2. In some Fall Camp sessions, the most impressive Wolf has been Qua Russaw, which should earn him a regular rotation slot. Not far behind Russaw is Yhonzae Pierre.
  • Inside Linebacker - The starters are Deontae Lawson at Mike and Jihaad Campbell at Sting. The second unit is ably handled by Justin Jefferson and Jeremiah Alexander. Kane Wommack calls Jefferson a third starter. Yhonzae Pierre has also worked at inside linebacker. Though inexperienced, Justin Okoronkwo has stood out in full contact action.
  • Cornerback - Mark Domani Jackson down as a starter, likely at field corner. The other cornerback spot is up for grabs. The contenders are transfer DaShawn Jones, along with freshmen Zabien Brown and Jaylen Mbakwe. The WKU and USF games will be auditions for the second cornerback starter.
  • Husky - Like Nick Saban's Star position, the Husky is a combination of cornerback and speedy linebacker. DeVonta Smith is believed to lead, but he is being pushed by freshman Red Morgan and King Mack.
  • Safety - One of the two safeties is called the Rover. That is Malachi Moore's spot and he has it locked down. The other starting safety is expected to be Michigan transfer Keon Sabb. Bray Hubbard and Kam Howard are the primary backups, but if needed DeVonta Smith can fill in a safety, along with King Mack.

The kicking specialists are set with James Burnip. Graham Nicholson and Kneeland Hibbett. The top kickoff returner is expected to be Kendrick Law. Punt returner is not settled with Germie Bernard, Ryan Williams and Jaylen Mbakwe as the top three candidates.
