Looking for some Alabama Football good Fall Camp surprises
By Ronald Evans
Less than three weeks from now, when Alabama football players begin Fall Camp, there will be opportunities for surprises. The first day of camp on July 31 is not square one. Crimson Tide players have been preparing for several weeks or months to work their way up eventual depth charts.
The operative word for August will be change. A new head coach, a mostly new staff, new schemes on both sides of the ball. Transitions provide challenges, but they also offer opportunities.
It is expected the program might be more transparent about depth charts. For example, staff comments this summer revealed that Kadyn Proctor was working with the second-unit offensive line. Technically, as an incoming transfer, Proctor would have to earn his old job again. It is not expected to take long; when he does, it should be well-known.
An opposite situation exists at right tackle, wide receiver, and several of the defensive positions. Fall camp surprises can be expected. The surprises might continue into the September game schedule.
Seven Possible Alabama Football August and September Roster Surprises
Alabama Crimson Tide fans expect Ryan Williams to explode into an early key role. Williams has lived up to his advance billing in a few weeks on campus. JaMarcus Shephard has been quick to note the early impact made by Williams. Germie Bernard, Kobe Prentice. and Kendrick Law are expected to lead the wide receiver group but look for Williams to have an early key role. Another surprise could come from Cole Adams, who like Williams has stood out to Shephard. Though not mentioned often, Alabama fans should not be surprised if Emmanuel Henderson blossoms in Kalen DeBoer's offense.
Jihaad Campbell is primed to again start at inside linebacker along with Deontae Lawson. Campbell has played over 500 snaps in his Crimson Tide career. He has been solid, but not spectacular. Playing the Sting position for Kane Wommack, Campbell can have a dominating 2024 season. Also on defense, James Smith should get the chance to show why he was a 5-star recruit. Smith has only seen limited snaps, but that should change in 2024.
In the list of seven possible surprise, the final two go to freshmen. One is Red Morgan. Morgan may not start, but he is too good to not make an impact. The other freshmen, is TBD, as in which one of the Tide's highly regarded, 5-star cornerbacks breaks through first; Jaylen Mbwakwe, Zabien Brown, or Zay Mincey. One or two of the four freshmen could play their way into starting roles by midseason.
