The kryptonite that wasn't bodes well for the Alabama Crimson Tide
By Ronald Evans
Every Alabama Crimson Tide fan and probably every Georgia Bulldog fan went into Saturday night's game believing the same thing. Alabama's kryptonite was expected to be blitz, blitz and blitz some more from the Georgia Bulldogs.
According to PFF, the Dawgs did bring the heat frequently. Not once did a Georgia blitz call produce a sack of Jalen Milroe. Instead, Milroe and the Alabama Crimson Tide feasted on the Bulldogs. The PFF data shows Jalen Milroe's production against dialed-up pressure from the Bulldogs. Milroe was 17-for-20, producing 191 passing yards and one touchdown pass.
According to the stat sheet provided by rolltide.com, Georgia's pass-rushing efforts produced only one quarterback hurry in the entire game. Alabama football fans will revel in the game's heroics for years, but quietly the Crimson Tide offensive line was probably why Alabama won the game.
Georgia's defense was not at full strength. Edge rusher, Mykel Williams returned from injury and started the game. Williams was probably less than 100% recovered, from an early-season ankle injury. It is possibly a fully fit Williams could have changed Georgia's blitz success some.
Alabama Crimson Tide Offensive Line to get better
The Crimson Tide's offensive line was not perfect. There was a holding call and a false start. The Tide's run-blocking did not get a consistent push against the interior of the Bulldog defense. Two things helped the Tide's O-line considerably. One was the DeBoer-Nick Sheridan offensive scheme. Georgia could not cover all the Tide's receivers, with passes completed to 11 Alabama players. The second thing was Jalen Milroe's accuracy. He connected on his first 11 passes and finished the game at an astounding, 82% completion rate. After Saturday night, it is reasonable to believe the Crimson Tide offensive line will continue to improve.
Alabama football fans have long stressed about Milroe's accuracy on intermediate throws. That issue can be discarded. In Milroe's first 14 completions against Georgia, Jalen passed for 19, 16, 15, 15, 13 and 18-yard gains. Milroe's 16-yard touchdown pass to Jam Miller was so perfectly thrown that Miller did not have to reach for it. The Crimson Tide running back simply cradled the pigskin for a touchdown.
