  • No. 15 - Florida Gators (1-1) - Last week No. 12 - Florida began a stiff uphill climb to recover from their loss to Miami, by beating Samford 45-7. The Gators have a long way to go, against the toughest schedule in college football. Next up for Florida is Texas A&M in Gainesville.
  • No. 14 - Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-1) - Last week No. 15 - In my weekly SEC game predictions, I picked the Bulldogs to upset Arizona State on the road. It didn't happen. Late in the second quarter, ASU led by 24 points. A new team, with a new head coach, could have faded. Instead, the Bulldogs battled back, outscoring ASU 20-3 in the second half, before losing 30-23. State fans can be encouraged, but the Bulldogs must improve defensively, with a rush defense that allowed ASU 359 rushing yards. Next up for Mississippi State is Toledo in Starkville.
  • No. 13 - Auburn Tigers (1-1) - Last week No. 9 - It is easy to knee-jerk kick the Tigers when they are down, but getting physically pushed around by Cal is another low for Hugh Freeze. Hugh's Auburn Honeymoon is officially over. The Tigers have no quarterback and that is all on Freeze. The offensive line is porous and the secondary is weak. Next up for the Aubies is New Mexico in Auburn.
  • No. 12 - Vanderbilt Commodores (2-0) - Last Week No. 13 - The Dores are on a mini-roll, though beating Alcorn State 55-0 in Week 2 was a modest achievement. Next up for Vandy is an away game at Georgia State.
  • No. 11 South Carolina Gamecocks (2-0) - Last week No. 16 - I confess to underestimating the Gamecocks, who were unimpressive in Week 1, winning 23-19 over Old Dominion. They bounced back in a big way spanking Kentucky in Lexington, 31-6. Next up for South Carolina is LSU in Columbia.
