Seen through the view through some crimson lenses, let's consider where the Alabama Crimson Tide should be ranked. For simplicity in this review, the 'should be' rankings are identical for both polls.

Only 15 teams are highlighted, based on a presumption the teams that will be ranked at No. 16 and below don't provide enough separation for worthwhile debate.

In yesterday's latest SEC Power Rankings, I slotted the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Texas Longhorns as tied at No. 2. No ties are anticipated in the rankings below.

AP and Coaches Polls 'Should Be' Rankings

  • No. 1 - Georgia Bulldogs; 1-0; (previous No. 1 in both polls) - Georgia (1-0) handily beat the Clemson Tigers 34-3. The Dawgs are currently a slam-dunk No. 1.
  • No. 2 - Texas Longhorns; 1-0; (previous No. 4 in both polls) - Texas ran over Colorado State, 52-0.
  • No. 3 - Alabama Crimson Tide; 1-0; (previous No. 5 in both polls) - Alabama dominated Western Kentucky, winning 63-0.
  • No. 4 - Ohio State Buckeyes; 1-0; (previous No. 2 in both polls) - For a reported $20M player payroll, the Buckeyes should have had more than a 17-3 halftime lead over the Zips.
  • No. 5 - Oregon Ducks, 1-0; (previous No. 3 in both polls) - A 24-14 over Idaho came close to pushing the Ducks down to No. 6 or No. 7.
  • No. 6 - Notre Dame Fighting Irish; 1-0; (previous No. 7 in both polls) - The Fighting Irish got a good win in College Station, beating the Aggies 23-13. The Texas A&M offense was so weak, their previous No. 20 ranking in both polls was too generous.
  • No. 7 - Ole Miss Rebels; 1-0; (previous No. 6 in both polls) - Ole Miss opened with a 76-0 win, but it was over Furman. The cupcake win did not deserve a ranking over Notre Dame.
  • No. 8 - Penn State Nittany Lions; 1-0; previous No. 8 in AP and No. 8 in Coaches Poll) - The Nittany Lions opened with a 34-12 win over West Virginia.
  • No. 9 Michigan Wolverines; 1-0; (previous No. 9 in the AP and No. 8 in the Coaches Poll) - Michigan got a not particularly impressive opening win over Fresno State, 30-10.
  • No. 10 Missouri Tigers; 1-0 (previous No. 11 in both polls) - Missouri beat another week one cupcake, Murray State, 51-0.
  • No. 11 Utah Utes; 1-0; (previous No. 12 in the AP and No. 13 in the Coaches Poll) - The Utes beat Southern Utah, 49-0.
  • No. 12 USC Trojans; 1-0; (previous No. 23 in both polls) - USC taking down LSU, 27-20 was no fluke. The Trojans might not have the best talent in the game, but they were the best team.
  • No. 13 Tennessee Vols; 1-0; (previous No. 15 in both polls) - The Vols punished another cupcake, beating Chattanooga, 69-3.
  • No. 14 Oklahoma Sooners; 1-0; (previous No. 16 in both polls) - The Sooners added to SEC Cupcake City, beating Temple 51-3.
  • No. 15 Miami Hurricanes; 1-0; (previous No. 19 in both polls) - The Canes went into Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and pushed the Gators around, winning 44-17. Cam Ward was close to unstoppable for Miami.

What about LSU and Texas A&M after their losses? The Aggies will probably be in the 'Others Receiving Votes' section. LSU should be ranked in the range of No. 17 to No. 20.
