It’s fair to call Matt Moscano, host of After Further Review on ESPN Radio in Baton Rouge, an Alabama hater, but as far as last season is concerned, it’s not fair to call him wrong. As he proudly touted in his recent appearance on 3 Man Front, Moscano correctly predicted that Alabama would finish 9-3 last season, and now, he’s ready to double down.

Unsurprisingly, Alabama fans were quick to jump into the fight on social media.
Some Bama fans fell back on the success of the Nick Saban era in their defense, but Moscano admitted in his analysis that Saban was the greatest coach of all time. So, the argument is about the future, which Moscano doesn’t think is very bright because of the quarterback situation.
Ty Simpson is likely to take over the starting job in Alabama this season, and while he’s relatively inexperienced heading into his fourth year with the program, he does carry a five-star pedigree and plenty of talent. 2025 five-star Keelon Russell is certainly the more intriguing option for anxious Alabama fans who want to see their top recruit on the field in Year 1, but either way, as through much of the Saban era, quarterback play won’t be the only thing that determines the fate of DeBoer’s second season in Tuscaloosa.
Whoever replaces Milroe at QB full-time will be throwing to one of the best wide receiver rooms in the country, led by Ryan Williams, who will be even better after dominating the SEC as a 17-year-old freshman, and Germie Bernard. And, they will be protected by an offensive line anchored by veteran center Parker Brailsford and likely first-round 2026 NFL Draft pick, Kadyn Proctor.
Even if Simpson doesn’t quite play to Jalen Milroe’s level next season, that’s more than enough offensive talent to keep the unit afloat under DeBoer and Ryan Grubb, who reunited with his longtime boss after spending last season with the Seattle Seahawks. Not even to mention the defense that returns Domani Jackson, Zabien Brown, Bray Hubbard, and Keon Sabb in the secondary, with LT Overton anchoring the defensive line up front.

The SEC is difficult to navigate every year, and Alabama certainly surrendered its spot atop the mountain without Saban, but another nine-win season would be a shock in Tuscaloosa, unlike in Baton Rouge, where the Moscano’s Tigers haven’t lost fewer than three games since the 2019 national title run.
