Ranking the best Alabama Football Offensive Coordinators and how Ryan Grubb will compare

It is not easy to be an Offensive Coordinator for Alabama Football. It wasn't under Bryant and wasn't under Saban. Ranking them over a span of six decades is no small task.

Steve Sarkisian (2019-2020)

Sarkisian would probably never have coached in Tuscaloosa had Lane Kiffin not persuaded Saban to help Sarkisian rehab his career. It turned out to be one of the smarter moves Saban ever made. From an off-field Offensive Analyst in 2016 to a National Championship OC in 2020, Sark delivered for Saban and Alabama.

The 2020 Alabama Crimson Tide offense was Alabama's best-ever. In the National Championship Game against Ohio State, Alabama exploded with 52 points. There could have easily been more points but the Crimson Tide did not need them.

The AP story after the game was a perfect summation. "DeVonta Smith was uncoverable, Najee Harris unstoppable and Mac Jones impeccable..."

A simple, subjective ranking of the best Crimson Tide OCs

  • No. 7) Mal Moore
  • Tie No. 5) Brian Daboll - Mike Locksley
  • No. 4) Jim McElwain
  • No. 3) Lane Kiffin
  • No. 2) Homer Smith
  • No. 1) Steve Sarkisian

Ryan Grubb can have a hugely successful run at Alabama. Of course, to do so, Alabama will have to win a National Championship. If that happens, the rankings above will need to be updated.
