Ranking the top 10 Alabama freshmen contributors for the 2026 season

Talent runs deep among the Alabama Crimson Tide freshman class

Based on the 247Sports Composite, Alabama had college football's No. 2 class of 2026 recruits. Including Alabama's three 5-star-rated recruits, Alabama had six Top 50 additions. Four more Alabama freshmen were in the top 100 2026 recruits.

At least 10 Tide freshmen are too good to miss out on meaningful snaps in the 2026 season. After special team packages are finalized, the number could be more than 10.

The 10 Alabama freshmen ranked below include three former 5-stars, five 4-stars, and two 3-stars. The ratings are a handy measure of potential, but they neither guarantee nor limit what a player can accomplish in Tuscaloosa.

Ranking Alabama Top 10 Freshmen

  • No. 1 - Wide Receiver, Cederian Morgan - Even if Morgan doesn't start, he can be an impact player. He has all the physical tools: size, speed, and hands to overpower defensive backs.
  • No. 2 - Running Back, Trae'shawn Brown - The former 3-star had a door opened when AK Dear was injured, but Brown earned praise in spring work. Even if EJ Crowell had been healthy throughout Fall Camp, Brown might have outshone him.
  • No. 3 - Running Back, EJ Crowell - The former 5-star is a probable superstar who Ryan Grubb described as limited only by needing to "learn the game" of football. His considerable physical tools won't be enough until he masters all the fundamentals, at which point he could contend for the RB1 role.
  • No. 4 - Linebacker, Xavier Griffen - Another former 5-star who can play Wolf and off-ball linebacker positions. If Griffen didn't have so much depth ahead of him at Wolf, he would rank higher.
  • No. 5 - Safety, Jireh Edwards - At other SEC schools, the former 5-star would be a freshman starter. Since Alabama is loaded at defensive back, Edwards may not get many snaps, but the coaching staff will find ways to get him on the field.
  • No. 6 - Tight End, Mack Sutter - The Crimson Tide offense is expected to use two tight end packages frequently. Sutter may have limited total snaps, but he can contribute early in a backup role.
  • No. 7 - Wolf Linebacker, Jamarion Matthews - Though Matthews could also work inside, the Wolf role is his best fit. He might be fourth on the Wolf depth chart now, but with one injury to the top three, Matthews can become a key rotational player.
  • No. 8 - Bandit, Nolan Wilson - The Tide's deepest defensive position is at Bandit. Wilson is down the pecking order, but some of the Bandits can also play inside. In a heavy rotation, Wilson is poised to contribute if one or more of the upperclassmen are injured.
  • No. 9 - Cornerback, Jorden Edmonds - Edmonds will miss a few games due to injury. There is abundant talent at cornerback. But when healthy, he could earn a situational role in the defensive backfield. He has the talent to be higher on this list.
  • No. 10 - Bandit, Malique Franklin - Franklin could grow into an interior defensive lineman, but at 6'6', 275 lbs., he is lean for inside work now. He has gained some notice in Fall Camp, so injuries to others could lead Franklin to a rotational role.
