Fortunately for Alabama, the Crimson Tide won eight of its last nine SEC games to finish the regular season, putting itself in tremendous shape for the NCAA Tournament. A Regional hosting spot was long since secured, and a national seed that would set up hosting a Super Regional for the first time since 1999 remains well in reach.
Which is good, because Alabama didn't do itself any favors this week in Hoover.
In what has become a common theme for Rob Vaughn at the SEC Tournament, Alabama was immediately knocked out in a pitiful performance against Florida on Thursday afternoon, falling 13-3. It was another quick exit in Hoover for the Crimson Tide.
Under Vaughn, Alabama is now 1-3 in the SEC Tournament. In all three losses, the Crimson Tide has allowed 10+ runs, as AL.com's Kevin Scarbinsky pointed out on X. The lone win in that span came last season over 16-seeded Missouri in the opening round.
Alabama's SEC Tournament struggles under Rob Vaughn are ultimately meaningless
While a 13-3 run-rule loss to Florida was disheartening, it is mostly inconsequential. Sure, while on the bubble for a national seed, an extra data point or two in its favor wouldn't have hurt. But Alabama's resume speaks for itself, and one singular baseball game is not going to have as big an influence on the selection committee as those crashing out on social media might have you believe.
In fact, when comparing Alabama and Florida, it will be impossible to ignore the fact that the Crimson Tide swept the Gators in Tuscaloosa during the regular season, outscoring Florida 28-11 across the three-game series.
Alabama sits at No. 6 in the NCAA's RPI metric following the 10-run loss on Thursday. The top eight seeds are in line to host a Super Regional series, assuming you make it through the Regional round, which is of course the primary concern.
Playing at home for as long as possible on the road to Omaha is critical. Especially for Alabama. The Crimson Tide holds a 23-6 record on the year at The Joe. That includes an 11-4 mark in SEC play.
Alabama swept Florida, Auburn, and Vanderbilt in Tuscaloosa this year, while also winning two out of three against Ole Miss in the final series of the regular season. The lone blemish on the home resume was a baffling sweep at the hands of Arkansas in April.
Vaughn has done tremendous work with this team across his three seasons. His SEC Tournament record doesn't diminish that. He and the Crimson Tide will learn their fate in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
