Seahawks firing Ryan Grubb could open the door for him to join the Alabama staff

On Black Monday in the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks fired offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb after just one season. That could open the door for Grubb to join Kalen DeBoer in Tuscaloosa as part of the Alabama football staff after all.

Ryan Grubb was Alabama's offensive coordinator for around a month. After not landing the head coaching job at Washington, Grubb initially agreed to join Kalen DeBoer in Tuscaloosa as the Crimson Tide's OC. But in February, Grubb ultimately was offered and accepted the offensive coordinator job with the NFL's Seattle Seahawks, allowing him to stay in the same city and not relocate his family across the country.

On Monday, Grubb was let go by the Seahawks after just a single season as the team's offensive coordinator.

Even after a difficult season with the Seahawks, Grubb will be a highly sought after offensive coordinator in the college ranks. He's one of the most well-respected offensive minds in the sport, and there will be an obvious link to DeBoer and Alabama if Grubb is willing to move across the country this cycle.

Grubb was DeBoer's offensive coordinator at both Fresno State and Washington and worked on DeBoer's offensive staff when DeBoer was an offensive coordinator at Fresno State and then at Eastern Michigan. Grubb also worked on DeBoer's staff at Sioux Falls.

Grubb has never coached in the South and has been on the West Coast he joined DeBoer at Fresno State in 2017 when they both left Eastern Michigan.

It will obviously be a family decision for Grubb, but there will be a conversation had between DeBoer and his former top lieutenant.

Grubb was expected to be Alabama's offensive coordinator this season, and that title instead fell to Nick Sheridan, who had been the Tight Ends coach for two seasons on DeBoer's Washington staff.

The Crimson Tide's offense must improve in 2025, and in particular, they have to get more out of the QB position. DeBoer understands the pressure is on, and I'm sure he would gladly add Grubb back to his staff if Grubb is ultimately interested in the job.

Currently, Alabama's coaching staff is full so somebody would have to go in order to add Grubb to the on-field staff. I wouldn't expect that to be Sheridan, though Sheridan could receive more of a demotion on the staff to make room. He and Grubb could also have the co-OC designation along with JaMarcus Shepherd to keep everyone happy.

All of that is speculation and time will tell if Grubb is even interested in coming to Tuscaloosa this time around.
