The frustration of still not being able to run the ball remains in Tuscaloosa
Here we are at the end of October and the frustration of still not being able to run the ball remains with this Alabama football team. After another Saturday which included 45 passing plays and only 34 running plays in the second loss of the season, I've accepted that running the ball is an after thought in this offensive scheme, but now I'm trying to figure out why this is the case?
Folks will say well running the ball isn't a big part of Kalen Deboer's offense. But as I've stated before last year at Washington Dillon Johnson consistency ran the ball and he was over 1,000 yards, so I am not buying that running the ball isn't part of Deboer's offensive philosophy.
The next thing to look at with why this team doesn't run the ball and that is the line itself. This is an offensive line with at least four future NFL players on it and to think that they can't make a push on the line is troubling. Offensive line play hasn't been to an elite level in Tuscaloosa for a while, but there is more than enough talent along this line to be able to open holes for this running back room.
I am wondering does the coaching staff not trust this line? I know the right side of the offensive line has been questionable at times in pass protection, but I would think more than capable to control the line of scrimmage. There was absolutely no reason to be throwing fade routes to Ryan Williams inside the five yard line and this line should be able to get enough push for Jalen, Jam, or Justice to cross the goal line.
The third thing I look at trying to get an answer why this team doesn't run the ball and that would be if the running backs aren't as good as we think they are. It sounds crazy because we've seen both Jam Miller and Justice Haynes do great things but never consistently. I would much rather see these running backs be overly used than Ryan Williams being thrown to too many times a game.
In my mind you will see more positive results from running the ball 40+ times more so than throwing it, so I am wondering why this staff doesn't trust them to be the forefront of the offense.
I am not sure we will ever know why this Alabama team can't run the ball consistently or effectively but these are the only things I can theorize why this team can't run or chooses to not run the ball to the level Alabama fans are accustomed to. I do have faith this coaching staff will figure things out if not this year, it will happen next year with more experience within the Alabama program.
