The regular season contest between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Georgia Bulldogs will garner national interest. As I wrote recently, the game is unlikely to be make-or-break for either team. According to Dawg Nation, that perspective was incomplete. Incomplete, as in incorrect, for both teams.
Dawg Nation pointed out that since Nick Saban's start at Alabama, the Bulldogs had not blown out the Crimson Tide until last season's SEC Championship Game. In the 2007 season, Georgia beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa 26-23 in overtime. In the 2022 National Championship Game, the Bulldogs won by 15, but Alabama led in the fourth quarter.
Last season in December was different. The Bulldogs dominated the Crimson Tide. Alabama's net rushing total in Atlanta was minus-three yards. Georgia fans can boast that their team bullied the Crimson Tide. Few Alabama fans will disagree.
Dawg Nation points out that Alabama's mystique has worn off: "Alabama is now closer to everyone else in college football than the goliath it was during the 2010s." That statement is one of relief because the Crimson Tide has held the upper hand against the Bulldogs for so long. Nick Saban was 8-2 against Georgia. Kalen DeBoer is 2-1.
Georgia fans want a Crimson monkey off their backs. With the SEC Championship Game victory, next October's tilt in T-Town offers a complete escape from being in Alabama's shadow.
Credit to Dawg Nation for a realistic perspective on the October game: "Winning at Alabama won’t be easy next season. ... Georgia still has to go out and prove it is the better team than Alabama. It unquestionably did that last season. If it does so again in 2026, the idea of Georgia having an Alabama problem can be further buried."
The Game Inside the Game for the Alabama Crimson Tide
Alabama has the motivation to bury something as well. In Atlanta, the Bulldogs physically whipped the Crimson Tide in the trenches. Kalen DeBoer and his players need to make a statement as important as a win. It must become clear that the Crimson Tide can physically go toe-to-toe with any team. The Georgia game offers the Crimson Tide an opportunity for such redemption.
