The 2026 Alabama Crimson Tide football season opens with the East Carolina Pirates on September 5. There are plenty of unknowns about Alabama's season opener. Not the least of which is who will start at quarterback.

One absolute known is that fans inside Bryant-Denny will hate the 11:00 AM CST kickoff. Unless there is cloud cover, many Alabama fans will get baked by what will still be entrenched summer heat.

The game will be unpleasant for the East Carolina Pirates as well. The Pirates, under Blake Harrell, are coming off a 9-win season that included a bowl win over Pittsburgh. CBS Sports has ECU projected to bowl again, against the Kentucky Wildcats in the Cure Bowl. BetMGM gives the Pirates a 7.5- win over-under.

One of the 7.5 wins will come in Tuscaloosa. ECU fans have confidence in Harrell, who will go into his second full season as a head coach. His record is 14-5. Harrell was promoted during the 2024 season, after Mike Houston went 5-14 in 2023 and 2024.

Harrell's turnaround of ECU is impressive. According to ESPN data, the former ECU defensive coordinator had the No. 35 FBS team in defensive efficiency last season. Almost all of last season's defensive starters are gone, and Harrell has a new DC in Jordon Hankins. Starter depletion is just as bad on the offensive side of the ball. Harrell also has a new OC in Jordan Davis.

The ECU player and coaching turnover means Alabama may be in for surprises in Game One. The ECU defense may not change much from last season, but with a new QB starter and a new OC, the offense could be quite different. The good news for the Alabama Crimson Tide is that it doesn't have to worry about beating ECU. The Crimson Tide must just avoid the slight risk of beating itself.

Alabama Crimson Tide Opportunity

The contest should be one in which Kalen DeBoer picks the score. It will give him an opportunity for both Austin Mack and Keelon Russell to work with the first-unit offense, providing needed game experience.

Sweltering Alabama fans in Bryant-Denny will get good looks at many new Alabama players. Offensive and defensive schemes will not showcase much unnecessary for a Crimson Tide victory. A two or three-touchdown winning margin and no serious injuries would be a good beginning to the 2026 season.
