In the lead-up to the ReliaQuest Bowl, media viewing sessions and interviews have provided lots of good news for Alabama football fans. Based on comments by players and coaches the Alabama Crimson Tide is highly motivated to finish the 2024 season on a winning note.
In contrast to other teams, there has been no surprise opt-out news for the Crimson Tide. It had been expected that a lingering injury would keep Kadyn Proctor out of the bowl game, but he dressed out for the Tide's first Tampa practice and actually worked with the first unit on day two. It is possible a prudent coach's decision could keep him out of the game, or he might try to play. Either way; there will be no opt-out by Proctor.
Proctor trying to play while not 100% is a stark contrast to players on other teams. A healthy Cam Ward played just one half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Whether it was his decision or a mutual decision between him and the Miami coaching staff, the Hurricanes lost the game to Iowa State, 42-41. Ward set a record in the game's first half with three touchdown passes setting an NCAA career record of 158 TDs.
Another Alabama player recovering from injury, wide receiver Jalen Hale has practiced in Tampa. Hale is coming off a serious injury and worked in a no-contact jersey. He will not play in the bowl game, but his teammates and coaches were excited to have Hale back at work on the field.
More practice news from Tampa was that Jaylen Mbakwe appeared to be transitioning to a wide receiver role quickly and easily. The dynamic, former 5-star played many positions in high school. including receiver and quarterback. Mbakwe is not expected to start at wideout against Michigan but he is expected to have a key rotational role.
New Alabama Football Starter
There will be a new starter in the Alabama Crimson Tide secondary. With Malachi Moore's recent surgery, a new safety will work along with Bray Hubbard in the Alabama defensive backfield. Based on the two practice sessions in Tampa, that new safety will be freshman Zay Mincey.
On3's Charlie Potter spoke with Germie Barnard and Jah-Marien Latham after Saturday's practice. Potter asked about their NFL Draft decisions. Both players said they have been focused on the bowl game and their decisions have been on hold until after the game. After the recent NCAA ruling on JUCO seasons, there is optimism that linebacker Justin Jefferson will return for the 2025 season.
The Alabama players have been having fun in Tampa when off the field. According to Tyler Booker, the players have been happy on the field as well, "...To see that everybody's coming out to work with a smile on their face, that's very encouraging."
