Some freshmen just don't look like freshmen. Some arrive on campus with chiseled frames and appear as if they have already spent several seasons in a college strength and conditioning program. Those tend to be the freshmen who can carve out quick roles on the field.
All of that is true of Alabama freshman safety Jireh Edwards, a 5-star recruit in the 2026 recruiting class and one of the prizes of the Crimson Tide's haul. Edwards looks more like a guy who is entering his junior season than a freshman participating in his first few college practices.
I mean, just look at him:

Edwards is No. 10 in that clip, and already appears to tower over Zay Mincey (No. 12) and Keon Sabb (No. 3).
Jireh Edwards looks like a freshman who is going to find immediate playing time for Alabama
Any playing time that Edwards earns as a freshman will have to be earned. Alabama's deepest position group is in the secondary, and the 5-star will have to fight and claw his way onto the field.
The Crimson Tide returned both of its starting safeties from last season in Sabb and Bray Hubbard. Alabama also brought back experienced players at the position in Mincey, Ivan Taylor, and Dre Kirkpatrick Jr.
Edwards' quickest path to playing time could come at the Husky position, a hybrid safety/corner spot that is projected to be occupied by rising junior Red Morgan, who had a terrific second half of last season. Kirkpatrick Jr. is competing for that spot as well, but both may find it challenging to hold off the uber-talented Edwards.
The talent is there, and he's physically ready to play already. His path to defensive playing time will likely hinge on how quickly he can pick up the nuances of Kane Wommack's playbook. If nothing else, expect the 5-star from Maryland to become a special teams star in his first season in Tuscaloosa, and as the season goes on, more and more snaps for him on defense seem sure to come.
