Top 5 performances for Alabama Football in the NFL Week 5
Week 5 of the NFL season saw plenty of strong performances for former Alabama players. It was the defensive side of the ball that had the biggest impact, kind of ironic considering how much the Tide defense struggled on Saturday against Vanderbilt.
While the defensive guys stood out, it was also the 89th week in a row a former Tide player scored a touchdown in the NFL (h/t to Alabama Pro Updates on Twitter/X).
Narrowing down the list is always difficult. Honorable mentions this week go to Will Reichard (two 50+ yard FG's), Josh Jacobs (first TD as a Packer), Brian Robinson Jr. (two rushing TD's), and Jonathan Allen (4 tackles and a sack).
The Top 5
5. Marlon Humphrey
In what was the game of the day in the NFL on Sunday, Marlon Humphrey came up big when the Ravens needed it most.
With Baltimore reeling on defense, Humphrey jumped a throw by Joe Burrow on a slant route and intercepted the pass for his first pick of the season. The Ravens were trailing by three and needed a big play late in the fourth quarter to have a shot at winning the game.
Humphrey's interception set up a game-tying field goal and the Ravens would go on to win the game in overtime in a key divisional tilt.
4. Mack Wilson Sr.
Mack Wilson has bounced around in the NFL since getting picked by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round in 2019. He's on his third team in Arizona, but seems to have found a home, enjoying his best season as a pro so far.
Wilson had a big day in helping the Cardinals to a 24-23 win over the 49ers on the road. Wilson had six tackles, but came up with two key turnovers that helped swing the game for the Cardinals.
First, Wilson intercepted Niners QB Brock Purdy on a tipped ball in the third quarter with the Cardinals trailing 23-10.
Trailing by two in the fourth quarter, Wilson recovered a fumble in the redzone with the 49ers looking to put the game away with a touchdown. Arizona went on a long drive and kicked a FG that proved to the game winner right after that.
3. Derrick Henry
Derrick Henry reached a couple of important milestones in his Pro Football Hall of Fame quest on Sunday. He eclipsed 10,000 career rushing yards, becoming just the 32nd player in NFL history to reach that mark.
He also punched in his 100th career touchdown, becoming just the 27th player in NFL history to reach that mark.
If that wasn't enough, Henry busted a 51 yard run in overtime to set up the game winning field for the Ravens, helping Baltimore win its third straight game.
It's good to be King.
2. Xavier McKinney
Death. Taxes. Xavier McKinney intercepting a pass every week.
McKinney leads the league in interceptions with five, and has now picked a pass off in every game so far this season.
McKinney came up with back-to-back turnovers in the third quarter for Green Bay. With the Packers trailing the Rams 13-10, McKinney first picked Matthew Stafford off. On the next drive, McKinney recovered a fumble. The Packers scored touchdowns off of both turnovers, turning the three point deficit into an 11-point lead en route to a 24-19 win.
1. Pat Surtain II
Pat Surtain continues to make his case as the best cornerback in the league. He put together his best performance as an NFL player on Sunday against the Raiders.
Surtain picked off two passes, defended another, gave up two completions, and returned one of the interceptions 100-yards for a touchdown.
Surtain has helped the Broncos to a surprising three game winning streak after an 0-2 start.
