Ty Simpson just quieted a lot of doubters with a stellar Los Angeles Rams preseason debut

When the Los Angeles Rams selected Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick back in April, it was met with scorn from the media and fans alike. Even most Rams fans weren't pleased, hoping the team would target a player who could potentially help them get over the Super Bowl hump in 2026 instead of a quarterback who probably won't play for two or three years.

There were even plenty of questions about whether the Rams' organization was aligned with the pick. Some believed that GM Les Snead liked Simpson a lot more than head coach Sean McVay did, though McVay publicly denied it.

In Simpson's preseason debut on Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs, he quieted a lot of the doubters, showing the world what the Rams organization saw on tape and in person that made them pull the trigger with the 13th pick.

Former Georgia QB Stetson Bennett started the game, but Simpson got on the field on the third possession of the game, and he played the rest of the way from there. Simpson went 21-of-25 for 190 yards and two touchdowns while leading the Rams to a 20-12 win over the Chiefs.

He looked sharp and in command quickly, delivering strike after strike and displaying his ability to read the opposing defense. He was going through his progressions and picking the Chiefs apart.

Simpson's debut impressed even his most ardent detractors in the pre-draft process. Rams fans in particular have come around on Simpson quickly after how impressive he was in his first preseason action.

The Rams are one of the best-run organizations in sports. It turns out, they knew what they were doing. The rationale was always that they were never going to be in this position again to take a QB of Simpson's caliber in the draft. They had the opportunity to take a guy who could be the franchise QB once Matthew Stafford retires, and they pulled the trigger.

One preseason game isn't the be-all, end-all for Simpson. He's still got a long way to go before he's ready to take the reins. The good news is that he won't be expected to anytime soon, barring an injury to Stafford. He landed in the perfect situation to sit back, learn, and develop from some of the best coaches in the sport.

Simpson has been in a training camp competition with Bennett for the backup QB job. The Rams may still want to keep the veteran QB around as an insurance policy, but it was clear after the first preseason game that Simpson is the superior talent and is a capable backup to Stafford in year one.

The Rams have two more preseason games to play, which will give Simpson more valuable reps before the season starts.

It was an impressive debut, and one that immediately shut up a whole bunch of his critics. The vision for Simpson in LA is clear, and the former Alabama signal-caller has a bright future in the NFL.
