- No. 12 - Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-0) - Last week, No. 13 - The Bulldogs hosted Northern Illinois in Starkville and won 38-10.
- No. 11 - Auburn Tigers (3-1) - Last week, No. 11 - Auburn's defense was impressive in the 24-17 loss to Oklahoma. Auburn's main problem was quarterback Jackson Arnold holding the ball too long. His offensive line was not up to the task, as it allowed 10 sacks. Arnold's passing accuracy also continues to be inconsistent.
- No. 10 - Vanderbilt Commodores (4-0) - Last week, No. 9 - Vandy destroyed Georgia State 70-21 in Nashville.
- No. 9 - Missouri Tigers (4-0) - Last week, No. 10 - Missouri produced 458 yards while beating South Carolina 29-20. Most impressive was the Missouri defense that shut down the South Carolina rushers to 19 yards on 12 carries.
- No. 8 - Oklahoma Sooners (4-0) - Last week, No. 7 - Beating Auburn in Norman 24-17 included a new Oklahoma record for 10 sacks in a single game. In addition, the Sooners had four additional tackles for a loss.
- No. 7 - Ole Miss (4-0) - Last week, No. 8 - Ole Miss beat Tulane 45-10 in Oxford. At 3-0, the Green Wave were within shouting distance of being ranked last week. Maybe Tulane was too highly regarded, but they proved no match for the Rebels. Ole Miss won again with their unheralded backup quarterback.
- No. 6 Texas Longhorns (3-1) - Last week, No. 6 - The Horns beat Sam Houston 55-0 in Austin. Despite the blowout, the Horns did not earn a get-well win. Sam Houston, now (0-4), is one of the worst FBS teams.
