It sounds ridiculous to be disappointed when you lose a series to the No. 1 team in college baseball, even if that series defeat happened in your home stadium. But it speaks to how great of a start to the 2025 season Rob Vaughn and Alabama have had that it feels disappointing to lose two of three to Tennessee.
It especially feels disappointing after the Crimson Tide took the first game of the season and just needed to split the contests on Friday and Saturday to come up with a program-defining series win over an elite Tennessee squad.
Alabama won the first game of the series 6-5. They came up short in game two, falling 10-7 with a 9th-inning rally coming up just short. In Saturday's rubber match, they were largely non-competitive as Tennessee rolled to a 9-2 win.
The concerns with the pitching staff seem warranted following a difficult series for the Tide's starters. But it is far from time to panic considering Tennessee has the firepower on offense to make even the best pitching staffs look pitiful.
Vaughn seemed mostly pleased with his ballclub following Friday night's loss. There were no postgame comments from him following Saturday's 9-2 defeat as Vaughn prematurely hit the showers after getting tossed from the game.
On Friday's loss, Vaughn said:
"Our guys just kept showing up and competing. I thought we were tough as nails, but toughness doesn't guarantee you success. Just a couple too many mistakes tonight."
The back-to-back losses drops Alabama to 22-3 on the season and 4-2 in the SEC. The series sweep of Texas A&M on the road the weekend before gave Alabama a buffer in this series.
Alabama has another big opportunity this weekend against Oklahoma
Next up for Alabama is a mid-week matchup in Huntsville against North Alabama on Tuesday. That will serve as a tune-up as the Crimson Tide gets ready to host Oklahoma this weekend in Tuscaloosa.
The Sooners came into this past weekend at No. 10 in the country and should find themselves around the same spot after they took two out of three in Norman against Mississippi State. The Sooners are also 4-2 in SEC play; they also won two out of three to open SEC play in Columbia against South Carolina.
There's no reason for fans to be concerned after the series loss to the Vols, but back-to-back series losses at home would be disconcerting for a team that had such a promising start to the season and was looking like a team that could compete with the upper echelon of the SEC.
