At the exact midpoint of the SEC football regular season, some clarity is emerging. How many great teams are there in the SEC? I concur with Peter Burns that there are two: the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Texas A&M Aggies. Burns also categorized the SEC as having eight other "good teams."
Before seeing the tweet from Burns, I had already completed a Week 7 SEC Football Power Rankings. Coincidentally, it closely tracks with Burns' opinion and concludes that the SEC has three tiers of teams.
A reminder to each week's SEC Power Rankings: "Each week's rankings are a snapshot of 'now' and not a prediction of how teams will finish the season. They are not the product of a computer model and are unabashedly subjective."
Let's review only the essential details of the SEC's bottom tier of teams.
- No. 16 - Kentucky Wildcats - The only SEC team to have played just five games, the Cats are 2-3 overall and 0-3 in SEC play. Kentucky had its second bye in Week 7.
- No. 15 - Arkansas Razorbacks - (2-4, 0-2) - Arkansas came close to beating Tennessee on the road, losing 34-31.
- No. 14 - Mississippi State Bulldogs - (4-2, 0-2) - The Bulldogs had a bye in Week 7.
- No. 13 South Carolina Gamecocks - (3-5, 1-3) - LSU beat South Carolina 20-10 in Baton Rouge.
- No. 12 Florida Gators - (2-4, 1-2) - The Gators lost on the road to Texas A&M, 34-17.
- No. 11 - Auburn Tigers - (3-3, 0-3) - Auburn lost at home to Georgia 20-10.
