The easiest college football storyline to attract attention is simple. All that is required is to write or say something negative about the Alabama Crimson Tide. Most across the world of college sports will gobble up every morsel, even when it is nothing but tripe.
Usually the negatives are about Alabama Football, though Nate Oats has recently been in the crosshairs for adding Charles Bediako to the Crimson Tide roster. Oats appears comfortable with the role of a demon, somewhat similar to how Nick Saban used to relish it.
Kalen DeBoer is both different and the same in a different context. DeBoer appears to shed most attacks and predictions of failing in Tuscaloosa. In a recent story, David Wasson stated that DeBoer will not survive the 2026 season. Wasson is a pro with deep knowledge of Alabama football. His claim about DeBoer is rooted in Alabama history: specifically, the transition from Paul 'Bear' Bryant to Ray Perkins. Following Bryant was like following Saban now. Calling it a no-win situation is close to the truth.
Perkins chose to leave for a return to the NFL. Wasson suggests DeBoer will be out after the 2026 season, whether he decides to leave or not. The reality is no one knows what will happen with Kalen DeBoer, not even himself. Predicting his demise is low-hanging fruit, which, though tiresome, attracts attention.
Wasson's piece explains that DeBoer's dilemma is more than following 'The Goat.' Another challenge for DeBoer is competing for player talent in an era when programs with the highest player payrolls have a considerable advantage. Nick Saban turned his coaching back on this new world of college football. There is a growing belief that in the new money-driven game, Nick Saban would have struggled to win championships. Those who believe that might conclude that DeBoer has as much, or more, chance to succeed at Alabama as any other coach.
The only Alabama Crimson Tide Standard is Championships
DeBoer's biggest problem is one he cannot change. As the greatest college football program of all time, Alabama is not just expected to win championships; the Crimson Tide fanbase and benefactors demand national championships.
Alabama's football history may define what Kalen DeBoer must accomplish. No Alabama head coach since Bryant has had a fifth Alabama season after going four seasons without a national championship. If the historical pattern holds, Kalen DeBoer must win it all by the 2027 season.
