3 Alabama longshots who must pay off in fall camp for Kalen DeBoer

In the offensive line trenches, the Crimson Tide is counting on new, little heralded players

In sports wagering, bettors love playing longshots. At odds of 15-to-1 or higher, longshots can provide big payoffs, but it doesn't happen often. Some experts contend that losing on a longshot bet is five to ten times more likely than betting on a favorite.

There is no direct correlation between longshot sports bets and college football teams depending on unproven or unproven players. The Transfer Portal has fundamentally changed roster building. With the portal and NIL, developing a 3-star (or lower-rated) high school recruit does not produce frequent rewards.

The old measure of recruiting for upper-tier programs was to load up with blue-chip, 4-star, and 5-star talent. The Blue-Chip Ratio (BCR) was a solid indicator of what teams would be championship contenders. The standard was that a BCR of 50% was the minimum to be a championship contender. Indiana blew that thinking out of the water by winning a national championship with an 8% BCR.

Auburn had a 60% BCR last season and lost seven games. Auburn had a Hugh Freeze problem, but it also had former 3-star players who failed to produce in starting roles. In the 2026 season, Alabama does not have a coaching deficiency, but it is vulnerable to former 3-star players failing to deliver.

Alabama has a 64% BCR for the 2026 season. Only eight teams across college football have a higher BCR. Alabama also has two projected starting offensive linemen and one key backup who were 3-star recruits. They all came to Alabama via the Transfer Portal.

It is no stretch to claim that at least two of Racin Delgatty, Jayvin James, and Ethan Fields must produce for Alabama, or the Crimson Tide will be in big trouble. No amount of quarterback talent can make up for a weak rushing attack and porous pass blocking.

Alabama Football and 3-Stars

Some of Alabama's biggest stars were 3-star recruits: Mac Jones, DeMeco Ryans, Josh Jacobs, Kareem Jackson, and Javier Arenas. There have been many others. Alabama's former 3-star recruit offensive linemen don't have to be great, but they must be better than adequate.

Racin Delgatty - Projected starting Center

Delgatty came out of high school as a 3-star interior lineman, rated by 247Sports as the No. 179 IOL in the 2023 class. His 2026 transfer ranking was a 3-star and No. 35 IOL in the portal. The Cal-Poly transfer must do more than play well. He must be a leader for his offensive line teammates.

Jayvin James - Projected starting Right Tackle

James was ranked a 3-star recruit in the 2023 class and the No. 161 offensive tackle. In three college seasons at Akron and Mississippi State, James had 18 starts. He was a Transfer Portal 3-star, with a No. 20 portal offensive tackle ranking. James was an effective pass blocker for the Bulldogs last season.

Ethan Fields - Potential starting guard or tackle

Along with former 4-star recruit Nick Brooks, Fields is a probable key offensive line backup. Fields was a high school 3-star and No. 61 IOL in the 2023 class. He played at Ole Miss for three seasons, playing in 19 games. He was a 3-star in the Transfer Portal with a No. 33 IOL portal ranking.

The Alabama football staff doesn't consider these guys as longshots. Hopefully, their performances back up that confidence.
