Xavier Griffin has spent the first month of his Alabama career showing flashes of why he was one of the nation's top defensive prospects coming out of high school and why the hype followed him to Tuscaloosa.
But Saturday in Starkville felt different.
This wasn't a flash.
It was a statement.
The freshman hybrid linebacker helped set the tone earlier against one of college football's hottest quarterbacks coming in, Mississippi State's Kamario Taylor, leading the Tide in stops with nine total tackles en route to recording his first collegiate sack.

For Kalen DeBoer, it was more than just an early sighting. It was another sign that Griffin is beginning to turn his natural ability into tangible production — the kind Alabama's pass rush can count on as the season enters its most demanding stretch.
Kalen DeBoer knows Xavier Griffin's motor can help Alabama control critical games
"Just even last week, he had a time or two where, you know, he's got a chance to make a play, or sometimes you know there's times when you go after the quarterback and be aggressive," DeBoer told reporters after Alabama's 56 to 23 win over Mississippi State. "Sometimes, we need him to sit back and let the quarterback declare some things. And I thought he took the information, things he needed to improve from last week, and went out there and made a lot of plays. So he's athletic. He's got length. He's got a motor. I love his mindset, and him getting out there and giving us the help we needed in a game like this was critical."
Now comes the bigger test.
Georgia is next.
The Bulldogs will walk into Bryant-Denny Stadium under the primetime lights as a small favorite, putting Alabama in the rare position of being an underdog at home — making the snaps of emerging players like Griffin even more important, especially with Justin Hill and Desmond Umeozulu still sidelined.
This performance proved that Griffin has the speed and athleticism to consistently get home and make those traits work. It'll be interesting to see how effective he and Alabama's front can be against Gunner Stockton and a Georgia offense that has allowed just five sacks through five games.
