People promise all sorts of things during the recruiting process. One of the most important things for prospective student-athletes is to sift through all the nonsense and determine who is actually telling the truth.

For Alabama true freshman Xavier Griffin, a 5-star LB and one of the most highly touted defenders in the 2026 recruiting class, he's seeing firsthand that his choice to join the Crimson Tide was for the right reasons.

Kalen DeBoer, Courtney Morgan, and the rest of the Alabama staff that had a hand in his recruitment were adamant that Griffin would be a Swiss Army Knife for the Crimson Tide. The obvious comparison for him throughout the process was Jihaad Campbell, whose versatility was pivotal during his time in Tuscaloosa before he went on to become a first-round NFL Draft pick by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The coaching staff has lived up to that recruiting promise so far, moving Griffin all over - as seen during the A-Day scrimmage in the spring - and taking advantage of his strengths.

"Really just how they said they were going to," Griffin told WAAYTV on how he's being utilized. "Playing on the edge, letting me blitz, letting me cover, just all that versatile stuff."

Xavier Griffin is focused on his development as a freshman at Alabama

Griffin has been putting in the work this offseason in order to position himself for immediate playing time. He's added 25 pounds to his frame already, addressing the biggest potential issue in his transition to the college level.

His pass-rushing skill can be a weapon for Alabama from day one. He might find his way into the competition for Alabama's second off-ball LB starting spot next to Virginia Tech transfer Caleb Woodson, too. That spot appears wide open still, with playing time available for multiple guys.

While Griffin certainly wants to get on the field, he said his main focus is just on his development right now and getting to the point where he reaches his full potential.

"Of course to hit the field," Griffin said of his freshman season goals, "But really just making sure I'm developing and on pace for what I'm on track to be. Really I have high expectations, and I'm just trying to reach them."

Griffin has the right mindset. It's the type of mindset that will ultimately lead to early playing time. As fall camp approaches, Griffin will have the opportunity to stand out and position himself for a legitimate role as a freshman.
