Though bold predictions are a mainstay of the sports media, loosely defined standards are mostly nonexistent. Any bold prediction should have at least a faint chance of becoming reality. The problem is that future realities are mostly cloudy, and this season, they are particularly cloudy for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
In a recent post, I agreed with Katie Windom that Alabama could possibly go 7-5, or win it all for the Crimson Tide's 19th National Championship. And that is not waffling. Both the doubts and the potential are real.
Not deterred, I recently offered two Bold Predictions about Keelon Russell and the Crimson Tide. Today, I have two more. They are Bold Predictions about Kane Wommack's defense.
Alabama Defense Bold Prediction No. 1
Alabama will have its best Scoring Defense stat in seven seasons. Going back to 2020, Alabama's best Scoring Defense was tied for No. 9 in 2022, with an average of 18.2 points. Last season, Alabama was No. 20 at 19.2 points. I'm not predicting that Kane Wommack's defense can match Saban's banner defenses. Saban's defenses ranked No. 1 in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Those defenses allowed 13 points and 11.9 points, respectively.
Alabama Football Defense Bold Prediction No. 2
How great will the Crimson Tide's 2026 defense be? It will not be the SEC's best. The Georgia Bulldogs will earn that distinction. But Alabama will be in the nation's top five in Scoring Defense at the end of the regular season. That ranking will likely slip a bit in the postseason, but at the end of the regular season, Kane Wommack's defense will be higher ranked than what will be a very good (and highly ranked) Alabama Crimson Tide offense.
These Bold Predictions coming to fruition will mean that Alabama will not come close to losing five games, and the Crimson Tide will be a legitimate National Championship contender.
