Four-star defensive tackle Daron Payne committed to Alabama during the Under Armour All-American Game. He chose the Tide over Auburn, citing that he felt better about his development in Tuscaloosa. On the same day, five-star cornerback Kendall Sheffield picked Alabama over Texas A&M. Sheffield played things close to the vest so no one really knew where he was headed. The Aggies were thought to be the favorite. Sheffield said he knew where he wanted to go since the beginning his senior year. Sheffield was a huge pick-up that can help alleviate the concerns from a shaky secondary this season.
There were a bit of rumblings that four-star wide receiver Lawrence Cager would pick the Tide at the Army Bowl but various reports said that the parents wanted Miami so he decided on them. There is still a lot of time left to National Signing Day so if the Tide wants to add him, I believe there is still a good chance. Andrew Bone reported that he still intends to take an official visit to Alabama.
Another prospect that could return to the Tide is four-star wide receiver Daylon Charlot out of Louisiana. Charlot was once committed to the Tide but decommitted a short time ago. After reading interviews, it seems to me Charlot likes Alabama but parents and friends are pushing LSU. There’s always a lot of pressure on Louisiana kids to stay in state but the Tide has pulled some from there in the past few seasons. Charlot intends to take an official to Alabama, as reported by Andrew Bone.
At the running back position, the staff is looking at four-star running back Damien Harris out of Kentucky. Harris is another that is getting a lot of in-state pressure to stay home and play for the Kentucky Wildcats. According to reports, he spent a lot of time around the Alabama commits at the Under Armour Game and even celebrated when Daron Payne announced for Alabama. Harris recorded a great performance at the game, rushing for 122 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. From all accounts, the Tide is in good shape with him. Harris will announce on January 9.
The Alabama staff will probably add another offensive tackle as well. The best possibilities right now include four-star Chidi Valentine-Okeke out of Georgia or four-star Isaiah Prince out of Maryland. Valentine-Okeke was once thought to be a Georgia lean but with the departure of some of the coaching staff, he now says he will select from Auburn or Alabama. Alabama is the favorite right now on his 247Sports’ Crystal Ball Predictions. Maryland is the favorite for Prince as of now but the Tide only trails the Terrapins by 3-percent.
Alabama currently has 24 commitments and I have seen the number to shoot for was 27. That’s not figuring in any grade casualties that could come in. A few wildcards could work their way in. Four-star defensive tackle Jonathan Taylor could end up in the class. The staff is taking their time on this one since he has some legal issues to work through from when he was kicked off of Georgia’s team. Another possibility is five-star defensive end CeCe Jefferson out of Florida. He is a tough one to get a read on but I think he will be heading somewhere else. I hope I am wrong on that one. The Tide staff is really high on Jefferson so there’s no doubt he is a take for Alabama.
