The media has picked Alabama to win the SEC West, but Auburn to win the SEC in a perfect example of why you shouldn’t care about preseason predictions.
The media has voted, and the results are pretty clear; they have no idea what they are talking about. The votes are in from SEC Media Days and the media has done it again, they’ve picked the impossible. The media has picked Alabama to win the SEC West, but Auburn to win the SEC.
Of course if Alabama were to win the SEC West it would be impossible for Auburn to win the SEC, but why let that get in the way?
Obviously some folks picked Georgia to win the East and win it all over Alabama, so that’s how this unlikely choice came to be. Still this is the perfect of example of why you shouldn’t care what the media says in the preseason.

Mandatory Credit: Kelly Lambert-USA TODAY Sports First off let’s take Georgia itself. Georgia has been picked to win the SEC East just about every year since Urban Meyer left Florida in 2010. In those five years they’ve done it twice and never won the SEC. Mark Richt has been at Georgia for fifteen years and I think the media has picked him to win it all for fourteen of them. Mark Richt has never won a national title, and he’s just not going to. I know Mark Richt has a great group of super talented kids this year, he does every year, but no one does less with more than Mark Richt. If you want smart money in the East go with the folks who’ve consistently won it, Mizzou.
Now for Auburn, the jewel of West Georgia. Auburn went 7-5 last year. I know Auburn fans talk about how Gus Malzhan is just as good as Saban and they are on the way up, but they went 7-5 last year. Auburn didn’t have a good season last year, their defense was horrible. This year Auburn has less experience on defense and lost major play makers, but they got Will Muschamp.
Nov 15, 2014; Gainesville, FL, USA; Florida Gators head coach Will Muschamp reacts after they were called for a pass interference penalty during the second half against the South Carolina Gamecocks at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Florida Gators 23-20 in overtime. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY SportsWill Muschamp is a great defensive mind, if you stop looking at his resume in 2009. Will Muschamp is just the angry Mark Richt, overrated and will do very little with a lot. Now maybe since Auburn doesn’t have much defensively he will work magic, but I doubt it. The idea that Will Muschamp will make a bunch of rookies unstoppable because he is will Muschamp is crazy, if he could do that why didn’t he do it at Florida? Florida let four teams drop over 30 points on them last year, then sent a bunch of guys to the NFL. But at Auburn he’s going to do miricales? Yeah, ok.
Look obviously I think the Tide can win the East and the SEC this year, that’s no secret, but throw all my points out the window and the media still gave you a scenario that literally can’t happen.
So the next time one of those media “experts” [cough]Tim Brando[cough] starts talking about how long they’ve been in the business and how they are so much smarter than fans remember that as a group they picked a completely impossible scenario for the SEC.
