WOAT No. 6 – Joe Paterno – Penn State (1966-2011)

Record against Alabama Football: 4 Wins – 10 Losses

Never has a football coach been so long revered, only to end his career so reviled. Joe Paterno was a literal coaching legend, unparalleled in terms of sustained success. His 409 career victories are unmatched by any coach who competed at college football’s highest level.

In 2011 Joe Paterno’s world fell apart. Paterno was dismissed by Penn State on the belief he ignored deplorable, child, sexual assaults by former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Many Penn State fans felt betrayed, most by Paterno, but also others by Penn State’s dismissal of Paterno.

Paterno’s Penn State teams won National Championships in 1982 and 1986. He coached his Nittany Lions teams to five undefeated seasons and 24 bowl victories in 37 bowl games. Paterno was voted Coach of the Year 10 times. His teams won the Big Ten Championship in 1994, 2005 and 2009.

However one chooses to define Joe Paterno’s legacy as a man, his legacy as a football coach is extraordinary.

Joe Paterno’s career was not tarnished by his record against Alabama Football. It was one of his few football blemishes but a 4-10 record against the Tide qualifies him as an Alabama Opposing Coach WOAT.

Joe Paterno died a little more than two months after being dismissed by Penn State. He battled lung cancer during those last months of his life.
