Alabama Football Daily Insider Report: Post-Scrimmage Updated Depth Chart
By Ronald Evans
Quarterback – Jalen Hurts
Jalen Hurts is the 2017 Alabama football starting QB. Barring injury that will not change throughout the 2017 season. Jalen connected on some long touchdown tosses during the scrimmage.
Backup QB – Tua Tagovailoa
Going into the scrimmage, we believed Tua Tagovailoa, based upon physical maturity, would edge out Mac Jones as the No. 2 QB. Scrimmage reports stated Tua and Mac looked sharp passing during the scrimmage. Several observers rated Tua as the best of the three passers on Saturday.
We are not predicting any competition for the starting job, but based on one scrimmage, Tua has strengthened his position as No. 2.
Running Back – Damien Harris or Bo Scarbrough
Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough will be 1A and 1B. The other four: Jacobs, Emmons, Najee Harris and Robinson are good enough to play in 2017. Bo, Jacobs and Emmons missed the Saturday scrimmage due to injury. Damien Harris played on a bad foot. Najee Harris wowed observers. All indications from spring are that Najee is too good to not have a role in 2017.
Wide Receiver – Calvin Ridley and ?
Calvin Ridley and five more wides will be in a rotation. The next most likely starter with Ridley is Robert Foster. T.J. Simmons had a big scrimmage, catching seven passes. We expect Simmons or Cam Sims to be the third starting wideout.
The next two in the rotation are mostly likely Jerry Jeudy and Tyrell Shavers. Chadarius Townsend may work into the mix and Henry Ruggs will be a factor after his summer arrival.
Trevon Diggs appears to be settled into the defensive side of the ball.
