Alabama Football: Day 3 NFL Draft could boost Tide numbers
By Ronald Evans
After an explosive NFL Draft first-round for Alabama football, day two was disappointing. On day three, the Tide can add several selections.
So far the 2018 NFL Draft has been a bang and a whimper for Alabama football. Former Crimson Tide players dominated the first-round with four selections. The Tide was blanked in the second-round. It almost happened again in the third round, with Ronnie Harrison finally picked with the No. 93 pick.
After round one there was considerable optimism Alabama football would set a new one-year draft record. The current Crimson Tide record was set in 2017 with 10 players selected. The Tide could still break that record with an active third day.
Three players expected to be drafted
Da’Shawn Hand, Anthony Averett and Tony Brown should be drafted in the fourth or fifth round. Most mock drafts had Hand being selected in the second-round. Averett was usually mocked in the third-round and Tony Brown in the fourth-round. Then again, some mock drafts had Ronnie Harrison as a late first-round pick.
Harrison did not run for teams due to a hamstring problem. Apparently, that caused teams some concern. He was also questioned for his coverage skills in space, with most teams defining him as a box safety. His pre-Draft grade was second round so the drop to the third was not a complete shock.
Other Alabama football draft possibilities
Bo Scarbrough, Shaun Dion Hamilton, Brad Bozeman and J.K. Scott are certainly draft-quality players. Bo’s injury history may cause concern. Hamilton’s recovery is more of an issue than the fact he suffered two major injuries in college. It is hard to imagine Bo and Shaun Dion not being drafted in a late round.
J.K. Scott will play in the NFL but that does not guarantee he will be drafted. Brad Bozeman is also a possible late-round pick.
Robert Foster’s speed and Levi Wallace’s strong performance last season may earn them draft selections. Josh Frazier could become a fortunate draft choice for some team. Frazier was overshadowed by his Crimson Tide teammates but has the talent to play in the NFL.
As for the first three rounds, the Bama Hammer Live Draft Blog will be updated with every development on Saturday.
