Alabama Football: Players prepare for racial justice march
By Dakota Cox
Alabama football players will be fighting for a bigger cause today.
While we inch closer to the college football season, Alabama football players have other things on their minds. At 4:00 PM on Monday, Crimson Tide athletes will be marching from the athletic facility through campus in the name of racial justice.
This is in the wake of Jacob Blake being shot in the back seven times by law enforcement. Athletes across the country have been protesting, from college football teams canceling practice to the NBA postponing the Playoffs.
We have seen multiple Alabama football players post messages on social media about their march, including details and requests. They specify that this is not a fan event. They do not want people to come in hopes of getting an autograph or picture with their favorite players. They have also emphasized that everyone who comes to this march needs to wear a mask.
The most prominent Tide athlete who has spoken about the march is senior running back Najee Harris.
This is not the first time that this team has taken a stance for positive change. After the death of Michael Floyd, Alex Leatherwood penned an essay that was recorded by the entire team. That video was published by Alabama football, and it received mixed reviews by the fans.
These actions are as peaceful as humanly possible. The athletes are peacefully protesting on their own time. This march does not interfere with anything that has caused complaints in the past. It is simply an organized march in the name of racial justice.
If anything, this march shows the maturity and the leadership of the returning seniors for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Najee played a pivotal role in leading this march. Alex Leatherwood wrote the aforementioned essay. In an unprecedented college football season, having great leaders will go a long way.
