Alabama Football: Tua remains undefeated as starting quarterback
By Dakota Cox
Alabama football’s Tua Tagovailoa is still undefeated.
Ever since Tua Tagovailoa stepped onto the Alabama football field, we knew that he was destined for greatness. He stepped up countless times for the Crimson Tide. Although his college career was cut short, Tide fans knew that Tua would do great things in the NFL. He is only two starts into his career, but he has already done great things.
The Miami Dolphins are undefeated since Tua took over as the team’s starter, and they are on a four-game win streak. Their latest victory against the Arizona Cardinals helps keep them competitive in the AFC East, and Tua himself played a pivotal role in this game.
Against the Rams, Tua struggled. The game plan was incredibly conservative, and he was not asked to do much. His only NFL experience was when he went perfect in garbage time against the Jets. Thanks to some key plays by the Miami defense, the Dolphins won without any heroics from the former Alabama football star. In this game, Tua helped carry the offense in the second half. He led a 93-yard touchdown drive and helped ice the game with a quarterback sneak in the final possession.
Tua was allowed to take more shots down the field in this game. The intermediate passing game opened up, and Tagovailoa took advantage of it. He used his touch and poise to carry the Dolphins on multiple key drives.
Although Tua had 248 passing yards and 2 touchdowns through the air, some of his best plays were with his legs. He scrambled for multiple first downs and avoided big sacks. This pocket presence is a key piece to Tua’s game, and it is helping the Dolphins so far in the early stages of his career.
It’s not just that the Dolphins are 2-0 with Tua under center. It’s that they were two upset wins. Both the Rams and the Cardinals were favored, but the Dolphins won. You can’t say that they are only winning because of Tua, but the team has new energy since the change at quarterback.
Tua now has as many wins as Joe Burrow, and Burrow has started all season. Justin Herbert has started in more games than Tua, and he only has one win. While winning is not simply a quarterback stat, it is what the game boils down to.
We’ll see if Tua can remain undefeated next week as the Dolphins take on Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers.
