5 greatest moments from Alabama football vs. Ohio State

3. DeVonta Smith cooking the entire secondary in just one half

We were curious what Ohio State’s plan would be to limit DeVonta Smith’s impact in the national championship. Now that the game is over, I’m still curious what their plan was. Smitty could do whatever he wanted in the first half of this game, and he won the MVP award on those actions alone.

Smith got hurt in the third quarter, but he still has 215 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns. Those types of numbers just aren’t natural. That’s what we have come to expect from the Heisman winner.

Shaun Wade could not maintain Smith in single coverage. The safety help wasn’t very helpful. They got beat down the field when they pressed at the line, and they got destroyed underneath when they gave Smith a cushion. He was truly unguardable.

DeVonta Smith was making NFL catches on the sideline for good measure. You only need one foot inbounds in college, but Smitty was showing scouts that he was capable of getting two in.

The only thing that truly stopped Smith was a dislocated finger, and he probably could’ve made some one-handed catches if he needed to. There is now no doubt that Smith is the greatest receiver in college football history, and he will always be an Alabama football legend.
