Alabama football fans shouldn’t be surprised about what Smitty said
When you play for Alabama football, you surround yourself with some of the best to ever play. That used to be the mentality for quarterbacks, but it is now happening for wide receivers. DeVonta Smith caught balls from Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones, and he gave his opinion on two of those three recently.
When asked point-blank about Mac Jones and Tua Tagovailoa, he picked Jones. This was a surprise to some. After all, Tua threw the iconic 2nd and 26 pass to Smith in the national championship. He is seen as the best quarterback in Alabama football history, and he was the Heisman runner-up with DeVonta Smith at receiver.
However, this actually makes sense for many reasons. For starters, Smith won the Heisman Trophy himself with Mac Jones under center. Both players carried the 2020 team, and they were great together.
Smith also got the lion’s share of targets in 2020 with Jones at quarterback. This is mostly because Henry Ruggs and Jerry Jeudy went to the NFL and Jaylen Waddle got hurt, but it’s worth noting when you think about DeVonta Smith’s preference.
Even if DeVonta Smith were to prefer Tua, he would likely still say Mac Jones. Tua has been drafted, but Jones is looking to boost his NFL Draft stock. Any positive feedback from his teammates will help his profile, and that could literally make Mac Jones millions of dollars. This statement from Smith is simply him being a good teammate.
This doesn’t mean that Smith has anything against Tua. He has also said that he would love to pair up with him on the Dolphins, and that would be great for everyone involved. The Dolphins are an ideal landing spot for Smith, and they should consider drafting him third overall.
In the past, we’ve stated that there is no reason to compare Mac and Tua. That is still the case for an Alabama football fan, but Smith was directly asked to make a comparison. While you can debate his answer, it makes perfect sense that he picked Jones.
