Alabama Football: Five position battles to watch during Fall Camp
By Matt Melton
3. Inside Linebacker
The inside linebacker position should be a strength for the Alabama defense in 2021, partly due to the experience of the position. Yes, even after losing Dylan Moses to the NFL, the Alabama linebacker group is loaded with depth headlined by returning junior Christian Harris.
Harris enters year three in Tuscaloosa cemented as the leader of Alabama’s inside linebacker group after finishing with 79 tackles a year ago, second on the team to Moses. With Harris set, the main question obviously comes from who will replace Moses to start alongside Harris?
There are multiple candidates for the starting role, but arguably none bigger than senior Jaylen Moody and incoming Tennessee transfer Henry To’o To’o. Moody seemingly emerged as third on the depth chart a year ago seeing increased playing time toward the end of the season, while To’o To’o starred for the Volunteers defense a year ago leading Tennessee with 76 tackles.
While Moody and To’o To’o obviously stick out as the favorites to start alongside Harris, the Crimson Tide have a few other notable players that could potentially claim a starting spot in Fall Camp including Shane Lee and freshman Deontae Lawson.
Regardless of who we may officially see start alongside Harris, the inside linebacker position overall will be a strength for the Alabama defense in 2021 solely based on the depth alone. There are multiple players to choose from to fill the second inside linebacker position, but who will emerge as the starter over the next couple of weeks?
