Texas A&M pulls plug on Mark Stoops hiring Mike Elko

Following the Alabama Football win in the Iron Bowl news leaked that it was expected that Mark Stoops was going to be the next coach at Texas A&M. Many outside the program thought it was a great hire as Stoops has averaged nearly seven wins a season at Kentucky making them a respected team in the SEC. However, Aggieland didn’t feel the same way rushing to social media and message boards saying they didn’t like Mark Stoops and that he wasn’t a big enough name for them. That night Stoops would release a statement saying he was entertaining the job but, that he wasn’t leaving Kentucky.

The following day it came out that former Texas A&M Defensive Coordinator Mike Elko would be the next head coach at Texas A&M. This hire was exciting enough for Texas A&M fans who welcomed Elko with open arms.

Elko will likely become one of Alabama Football’s biggest rivals on the recruiting trails. It’s no secret that Texas A&M is willing to spend its way to top recruits like they did under Jimbo Fisher. The Alabama Football team had its successes against Mike Elko over his 4 years at A&M averaging 45.5 points per game.

The hire is a great hire for Texas A&M they bring in a coach who understands the program and has experience in college station. The question is however outside of coaching at A&M before what does Elko have that Stoops didn’t? Both went to Basketball schools and built them into respected programs that can compete against some of the top schools. We will see how Elko pans out but, the drama coming from Aggieland is fascinating.
