As expected, Nate Oats and Alabama basketball reeled another big fish into the boat on Saturday.
One day after predictions rolled in for the Crimson Tide to land composite 5-star PF Zion Green, the Philadelphia native made it official by announcing his commitment to Alabama:

Green had been trending toward Ole Miss after making several official visits in September, with Alabama and Oklahoma as the other two teams under serious consideration. But the Rebels ultimately took a commitment from a player with a similar athletic profile - 4-star Ahmed Nur - and that reopened the door for the Crimson Tide to swoop in and land Green.
He's the No. 24 overall player and a 5-star in the composite rankings. He's got a confident shooting stroke and plays more like a big wing right now at 6-foot-9 and 190 pounds, though he'll likely continue growing into his frame and potentially end up as the stretch-four that Oats has always coveted in Tuscaloosa.
Zion Green is the 2nd composite 5-star to join Alabama's 2027 recruiting class
Green is the second composite 5-star to join the Crimson Tide's class. Alabama landed 5-star combo guard Chase Lumpkin back in early September. Green's commitment will leapfrog Alabama into the Top 10 of the composite recruiting rankings once again.
Take a second and appreciate how Oats consistently recruits in Tuscaloosa. Chances are, you don't appreciate it enough. Alabama is never the highest bidder for anyone. The budget Oats has to work with pales in comparison to the others he's competing against.
And yet, he's consistently bringing in elite class after elite class in the high school ranks and putting together rosters capable of competing with the upper echelon of college basketball.
Oats has landed Top 10 composite recruiting classes three times previously. That includes the 2026 cycle, which has already flashed its immense potential in the three exhibition games, with Qayden Samuels, Tarris Bouie, and Jaxon Richardson all flashing in the preseason and Anderson Diaz waiting in the wings to show his ability when he gets back healthy.
That doesn't count Cole Cloer, who is listed as a freshman but was technically part of the 2025 high school class after reclassifying and enrolling at NC State in January.
Oats has Alabama off to a hot start in the 2027 cycle. Things might be quiet for a bit now, though. With Lumpkin and Green in tow, the Crimson Tide may be in wait-and-see mode once the season gets off and running, so they can determine who may or may not return for next season.
But one thing we know about Oats and Murphy on the recruiting trail is that they move in silence. There will probably be another surprise or two in the coming months.
