On Monday it was announced that three Alabama defensive players were named SEC Players of the Week. There is no question that Bray Hubbard, Caleb Woodson and Devan Thompkins deserved their honors.
What makes the achievement more remarkable is that it is an SEC Player of the Week (POTW) milestone for the Crimson Tide. According to ChatGPT, three Alabama defensive players have never been so honored in the same week. Alabama had a trio of Players of the Week in 2024, when one defensive player, Jihaad Campbell, joined Jalen Milroe and Tyler Booker as SEC POTW winners.
Zabien Brown and Yhonzae Pierre were so honored last season, but never have three Alabama defenders won in the same week.
Alabama Week 2 Player Achievements
- SEC Co- Defensive Player of the Week - Caleb Woodson. Woodson led the Crimson Tide in tackles against Kentucky with 12 stops. Two of Woodson's tackles were sacks, producing 13 lost yards for the Wildcats. Woodson played three seasons at Virginia Tech. His Saturday stats were new career milestones for the linebacker.
- SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week - Luke Metz. Metz made his first start against an SEC opponent and did not ease into the action. His 34-yard interception return for a touchdown was Alabama's only first-half six-pointer. He was Alabama's second-leading tackler with eight stops.
- SEC Co-Defensive Lineman Player of the Week - Devan Thompkins. Thompkins was the Crimson Tide's defensive front mainstay against the Wildcats. His 56 snaps, tied with Dijon Lee, were just behind Zabien Brown's 60 snaps as the defenders deemed most essential for Alabama against Kentucky. Thompkins was the Crimson Tide's third-leading tackler with six stops, including two sacks. He also forced a fumble, earning the Crimson Tide a turnover.
Alabama's position coaches share in the players' accomplishments. Much credit for their success should go to Kane Wommack for his schemes, play-calling, player development, and the defensive roster rebuild. The Alabama Crimson Tide defense appears to be on the verge of becoming one of college football's best.
