Unlike many teams, Alabama's computer model rankings are not a mishmash. Defined by Merriam-Webster, mishmash is "an unorganized collection or mixture of various things." Synonyms for mishmash are hodgepodge and jumble.
Every week of the season, I closely follow five computer rankings and pay little attention to the AP and Coaches human polls. The only human poll that merits much attention does not come out until Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Until November, my 'go-to' sources are Bill Connelly, Brian Fremeau, Kenneth Massey, Jeff Sagarin, and ESPN's FPI. Detailed below are Alabama's rankings from the four current models. Fremeau's trove of data is so deep that his weekly update comes out on Tuesday. Check back then for my deep dive into Fremeau's valuable data.
The only other SEC teams detailed below are those whose broad range of rankings makes their trajectories difficult to predict.
Alabama's potential is clear
- Alabama Crimson Tide (3-0) - Alabama is ranked No. 5 (Massey), No. 6 (Sagarin), No. 7 ESPN FPI, and No. 11 (SP+). Connelly's SP+ rankings have the interesting distinction that one of his metrics calculates how teams would perform against an average top-five team.
- Ole Miss Rebels (3-0) - The Rebels are ranked as high as No. 7 (Massey) to a low of No. 20 (SP+).
- LSU Bengal Tigers (2-1) - LSU's highest ranking is No. 8 (FPI), and the lowest for Lane Kiffin's team is No. 21 (Massey).
- Texas A&M Aggies (2-1) - The Aggies' high ranking is No. 10 (Sagarin), and the lowest for Mike Elko's team is No. 25 (Massey).
- Mississippi State Bulldogs (3-0) - The road win over South Carolina helped push MSU to a high ranking of No. 18 (Massey). Their lowest is No. 30 (SP+).
- South Carolina Gamecocks (2-1) - The Gamecocks' loss pushed them down 14 spots by Massey to No. 45. Their highest ranking is No. 24 (Sagarin).
- Auburn Tigers (2-1) - Auburn's home loss to Florida was also adjusted heavily by Massey's model, down 12 spots to No. 35. The high ranking for the Tigers is No. 20 (Sagarin).
- Kentucky Wildcats (2-1) - The SEC's upset of the week was the Wildcats' win over the Aggies in College Station. Massey's model upped the Cats 19 spots to No. 30. The low ranking for Kentucky is No. 49 (SP+).
- Oklahoma Sooners (2-1) - The Sooners' high ranking is No. 12 (Sagarin), and the lowest is No. 23 (Massey).
