Alabama's small commitment list for the 2027 recruiting cycle could be about to get even smaller.
Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide currently hold just four commitments for next season's recruiting class, though slow starts for this staff on the trail are nothing new. Alabama is positioned well with some of the top prospects across the country, but bad news could come before the flurry of good news during the spring and summer months.
3-star CB Nash Johnson III committed to Alabama back in October. He was an off-the-radar addition from Powder Springs, GA, but expected to blow up heading into his senior year. He's drawing a lot of attention from a lot of different programs now, and, according to Rivals Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons, is "trending away" from the Crimson Tide:

Nash Johnson is trending away from Kalen DeBoer and Alabama
Johnson has yet to set up an official visit with Alabama for the spring or summer, but does have a visit set with Auburn for May 29th. That's the only official visit listed for now, but Miami, Florida, and Tennessee are all pushing to try to land the current Tide commitment.
Johnson is the second of Alabama's four 2027 commitments to begin looking less than solid. Last month, it was 4-star in-state EDGE Jabarrius Garror, who has a plethora of other visits set up in the coming months.
CB is not a position that is worrisome for Alabama, however. The Crimson Tide signed two elite CBs in both the 2025 and 2026 recruiting cycles. Dijon Lee and Chuck McDonald in the 2025 class, followed by Jorden Edmonds and Zyan Gibson in 2026.
Alabama has positioned itself well in the recruitment of 5-star CB John Meredith III, with his recruitment looking like a two-horse battle between the Tide and Texas A&M.
Johnson is a talented player, but there's no doubt that DBs coach Maurice Linguist, DC Kane Wommack, and DeBoer will identify a talented player to take his place if he ultimately flips.
